Day 1: Adelaide to Dutchmans Stern Conservation Park
With an early start, we head north through the one of Australia's oldest wine regions, the Clare Valley. We enter the Southern Flinders Ranges and after lunch hike Dutchman's Stern for stunning views of the Spencer Gulf and surrounding ranges and plains. See how the flora changes with rock type, altitude and aspect on one of two main walking trails that explore the park and reward hikers with breathtaking views of the Willochra Plain, Spencer Gulf and the surrounding ranges. Tonight we camp amongst the red gum trees of Stony Creek.
Day 2: Stony Creek to Coober Pedy
After breakfast we head to Coober Pedy, home to 80% of the world's opal and a unique landscape featured in the movie 'Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome'. On arrival we take a tour of a mine and check out some of the town's unique underground attractions. Tonight we sleep like the locals - underground, in bunkhouse accommodation. Accommodation at Coober Pedy is at the Umoona Opal Mine which has attached Underground bunk house style rooms with three bunk beds, Blankets, Communal showers, Communal Kitchen, Communal Lounge, and toilets. Information on the Umoona Opal Mine can be downloaded from: http://www.umoonaopalmine.com.au/
Day 3: Coober Pedy to Alice Springs
We depart at sunrise, with a detour to see the amazing colours of the Breakaways. Incredible changing landscape, kangaroos, emus, eagles, road trains and enough stops to keep you happy along the way. Settle in as we cruise to our destination, Alice Springs , arriving around 6pm.
